Last year, I was building AI workflows. Everyone wanted the same thing: faster content, less blank-page staring.

So we gave AI a shot.

It wrote fine. Grammatically correct. Completely forgettable. Could’ve been written for the company next door.

I tried fixing it with better prompts. Longer instructions. None of it worked.

Because the problem was never the prompt.

Why Does AI Sound Generic?

AI can only amplify what’s already there. No clear point of view underneath it, and AI doesn’t invent one for you. It fills the space with the most average version of what’s already out there. Smooth. Safe. Interchangeable.

That’s not an AI problem. That’s an input problem.

What Does AI Need to Sound Like Your Brand?

  • A clear point of view. What do you believe that most people in your industry get wrong?
  • Examples of your actual voice. Real emails. Captions that sounded like you on a good day.
  • Real audience understanding. Not demographics. The problem keeping them up at night.
  • Existing content. Even messy stuff. AI needs raw material, not a blank slate.
  • Defined offers. What you do, in plain language, said the same way twice.

Give AI those five things, and it starts sounding less like a tool and more like a fast assistant who’s read everything you’ve ever written.

Skip straight to AI without them, and you get what most businesses are drowning in: generic posts, repetitive emails, websites that sound like nobody in particular.

How I Fixed It Myself

Here’s the part that isn’t fast.

I sat with thought leaders and just listened. Notebook and pen, no screen between us. I dictated brain dumps into my computer whenever a thought showed up.

Then I organized all of it, every note, every recording, into an actual brand voice.

No AI yet. Just the story. The values, in our own words. Client reviews, client stories, the language people were already using to describe the work.

That’s the legwork. It’s exactly what most businesses skip, and exactly what I help them do: dig out the story that’s already there, organize it into something real, before AI ever touches it.

AI doesn’t replace that voice. It speeds up production once the voice already exists. Only when the voice is clear, and fed to AI correctly, can AI actually help your marketing.

If you want to see what that legwork looks like, I put it together here.

Clarity isn’t optional. It’s the whole system.
